Community vs. Universe content Edit

Fellow editors: Projekt has made it known that the wiki will be almost entirely a player-generated affair, but requests that we be cautious with regard to separation between canonical and non-canonical information. If it comes from the game, the Developers, or the artwork they produce, it is "fact." Anything else is fan-created "fluff", which while cool, is to be separated or delinated clearly. Specifically, Projekt made the WotLD Community section for this purpose. Whitesymphonia's very quality Survival/Beginner's Guide is found there, etc. Let's keep up with the incredible amount of page generation/improvement, but keep in mind Projekt's request. Brendang 15:51, September 13, 2010 (UTC)

oh, wasn't aware there was any fan-created things yet. And I'm actually the one that made the section for WoTLD community. I just felt that those sort of things didn't really fit well into the wiki unless as a seperate user section. Whitesymphonia 23:40, September 13, 2010 (UTC)

Sorry, I assumed that he made it. I didn't realize you had access to that menu. Your survival guide is fan-created, no? Brendang 01:36, September 14, 2010 (UTC)

yea it is. Clobbered it together from some first hand experience and tips from the forum. Originally I was considering creating a resources menu that had resources such as guides, etc. but then i opted against it. Whitesymphonia 02:16, September 14, 2010 (UTC)

Wikia's new look Edit

Wikia is rolling out a new look. The WotLD wiki sometimes picks this up, sometimes doesn't. We're going to have to move to it within a few weeks anyway, so it's probably best to embrace the change and start editing menus and getting a feel for it as soon as we can. I've switched the the carbon theme of the new look. Some of you will still see the old Monaco skin, or the revised Monaco skin I created when I set up the wiki.

There are some good examples of how the new look can be customized:

http://reddead.wikia.com/wiki/Red_Dead_Wiki

http://masseffect.wikia.com/wiki/Mass_Effect_Wiki

http://starcraft.wikia.com/wiki/StarCraft_Wiki

It looks like the best approach would be to add some detailed panels to the front page which list the sections and provide quick links to the important pages. The top menus will have to be edited as well, but it's probably best not to use them as extensively as we were doing with the old look.

I'll do a bit of work on the front page as soon as I can, but if any of you guys wants to start fixing the menus, that would really help. The Red Dead: Redemption method approach would be my favourite of the various styles I've checked out, and I can provide images to use for the content links. Wotld 07:37, October 22, 2010 (UTC)

OK, I've looked into what I can do and I'll redo the front page completely over the next couple of days. Bear with me if things seem a bit broken at times. We'll need to avoid over-extending the menus so I'll post a final category list here soon. Wotld 07:56, October 22, 2010 (UTC)

Gonna try to copy red dead's main page format. Might look real messy right now. Gotta create all the templates, etc. giving me a headache from all this

Whitesymphonia 21:00, October 23, 2010 (UTC)

Great start! The front page and menus should probably have a higher level hierarchy rather than going straight into resources or locations, as there will probably be a lot of sections. I'll get some images together from the originals today and maybe see what sort of structure might work for all the various elements. The background images can probably go a bit smaller so as to deal with people who have widescreen laptops. I'll repurpose the image used in the startup sequence. Wotld 11:55, October 24, 2010 (UTC)

Yeah, there's not much for a hiearchy. We've only got 64 pages, some are really short and some are redirects for different capitalizations of the same word. I was thinking of putting locations as one of the main header sections, but we still need more images. I can't really find any that I can toss on. The items put together look good since they have the same format, but i tossed on the rest for a placeholder.

Whitesymphonia 13:43, October 24, 2010 (UTC)

I just had time to put together a background (which I'll improve upon over time) and a quick logo (again, needs some work). Don't worry about images at the start. Just get the structure worked out in terms of sections and I'll provide images. I'd say something along the lines of Gameplay | The WotLD Universe | Locations | Resources | Infocards | Characters | Achievements and so on. I'll try to flesh that out as soon as we get this release ready, but you see where I'm going. Probably no more than 8 or so main sections, Even just text is fine for now. Wotld 19:54, October 24, 2010 (UTC)

Capitalisation. Edit

When creating, and by extension, naming pages, I assume you want to have a standardised layout? At the Minute you have the likes of "Lootability nodes" and also "Convenience Stores" Do you want all words beginning with Capitals, or some other convention? Rosslessness 16:49, October 24, 2010 (UTC)

That is definitely a problem. As Whitesymphonia pointed out, there are some duplicate pages because of capitalization differences. I'd prefer to keep each word capped as a convention, so that it would be Convenience Stores rather than Convenience stores. Hopefully we'll weed out the dupes over time, but feel free to dive in and apply some standardization if you'd like to get involved. Any help is much appreciated! Wotld 19:57, October 24, 2010 (UTC)

I would capitalize all of the words. Then use redirects to redirect to the actual page. It's really messy cuz of that, and right now I just went for making the main page work. I'll create some redirects when I have time. Probably wait till the weekend or a day when I've got less work. Redirects are pretty effective since they just jump straight to the page you want.

Whitesymphonia 00:13, October 25, 2010 (UTC)

Capitalized stuffEdit

Right. All the pages on the Wiki are capitalised. Because of this the following pages are unlinked.

NECRA safehouse

NECRA safehouses

Safehouse upgrades which has also been replaced by Upgrade Items so is kind of pointless.

Upgrade items is only linked at Monaco-sidebar which I can't change it because of protection.

Don't know what you want to keep as redirects, and what you want to delete. --Rosslessness 16:00, October 29, 2010 (UTC)

Create a category called "Main Pages" or something. And mark the real articles with it. Then just redirect all the other capitalizations to that. It's easier since different capitalizations are considered different pages, this way it all gets directed to the original. Whitesymphonia 19:02, October 30, 2010 (UTC)

Oh, there already is a question about capitalization, no matter how old. Alright. So, are "Hunger", "Fatigue", "Zed", "Z-Density" and "Squad" proper nouns? Or should I (and everybody else) write them in small caps? Imho, if you talk about "hunger", you talk roleplay-ish. "My survivor is hungry" might mean, that you wanted him to take a rest or that he was injured and you didn't want to go on or whatever. "My survivor's Hunger has critcally increased" however means that his value is somewhere around 90%. The same is with "squad". If I have 10 survivors all huddled together in a single Safehouse (there, another one), I might call them a "squad". They pick clean a single area, depend on each other, like a squad. A Squad, however, is the ingame thing, a group of 0 to 10 survivors who are always at the same location and can be moved on the map... In a game of D&D, I always add my "Dexterity modifier", because the value is not related to my character's dexterity (that's up to me and the DM), but the value standing next to the "Dexterity" field on the sheet.
Any input on that one? How do you capitalize these things that are, basically, attributes of the player and/or his characters? --Elbi 23:30, November 11, 2010 (UTC)

Main Page Suggestion Edit

Would Anyone object to another line of pictures with links? I'm thinking, Broadcasts, Safehouses, Attributes and Movement? Sometinh like that? Rosslessness 12:37, October 30, 2010 (UTC)

No objections here. We're actually trying to make more sections like that. I just couldn't think of any other divisions, or find pictures for categories, so i just left it with the format you see here. If you've got pictures and such, you can go ahead and do it. I just recommend editing through source since i wrote it through the source, so some parts you can't use the WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) editor. Just saying. Whitesymphonia 19:04, October 30, 2010 (UTC)

Like the new line you put up. Only thing is we should make another section instead of expanding the resources section. It'd look better, except there's not really any sort of division we can make. Whitesymphonia 23:49, October 31, 2010 (UTC)

MappingEdit

I know WotLD uses Google Maps, but I'm curious to know how much of Google Map is being used. I think we should all be mapping the game, marking down what locations are where and so forth, thus giving future and current players a nice big detailed map to use should they ever want to find a specific location or what not. It's gonna require a lot of time, effort, and exploring, but I'm certain we can get the game mapped out. --Axe Hack 14:00, October 31, 2010 (UTC)

Probably not too hard. we just need to pick a zoom level and then we can create an image from screenshots. Either that or upload the map image and use the "Text on an image" template to add la mark for each location type. Rosslessness 14:21, October 31, 2010 (UTC)

It's probably best if we use the furthest possible zoom level. --Axe Hack 14:55, October 31, 2010 (UTC)
Browsing through Google Maps just now, I have a valid idea. Why don't we create a public Google account for WotLD users and use Google Maps' own "My Maps" feature to mark down the locations of WotLD? --Axe Hack 15:03, October 31, 2010 (UTC)
Thats an amazing idea Axe! Create one, and I'll get my squads to add stuff. Send us a faction message with the details. --Rosslessness 15:25, October 31, 2010 (UTC)
There's a predecessor to it. Check my faction message. Me and brendan argued over making a public map, it sorta takes away the fun of finding locations though. Only problem is finding out how to show all the point of interests at once, or enable that only points of interest in ur current view comes up. I did research on it, but I'm not crazy about replotting all the points I have already manually. There's a bunch of javascript coding behind it I'm not too crazy about learning either. If any of you want to take it up, I'll help. Whitesymphonia 23:48, October 31, 2010 (UTC)
Besides, now that buildings can be completely depleted and don't regenerate their inventory, I don't know how useful a map of emptied buildings would be. If you agree with me, maybe we could still use the map to show new survivors which way they need to go, if they want to find fresh buildings. Is there a possibility in Google Maps to create colored sectors? I'm thinking off a huge red shadow over the sectors you guys started playing, cause I guess your buildings are emptied as of now. Everyone with low stock on Food, Water and Ammo wouldn't want to end up there, when you picked everything clean... --Elbi 13:27, November 1, 2010 (UTC)
Just checked. Yes, it is possible to create colored sectors. As for buildings being emptied, would it be emptied for one player or does that affect every player? I'd like to know. --Axe Hack 15:22, November 1, 2010 (UTC)
For completeness, as you already know: The nodes are the same for every player. Once depleted, a location is empty for everyone and stays that way. Projekt also stated that new players will spawn in remote regions once there's a problem with empty locations (in the open beta). This could be implemented into the map, a quad to show "new guys spawn around here somewhere". --Elbi 19:02, November 1, 2010 (UTC)
I would just map safehouses now. Not much point in marking locations, but it's useful to know ur distance from the next safehouse to know where you can head towards. Faction-wise, we could show zones that we know we've cleared out.
Oh, my old map is here:
http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=en&msa=0&msid=112539126096732048505.00048e3078a3890298edd&z=12
Thinking of just changing it to only show safehouses. Gotta do that sometime if someone wanted to help.
Whitesymphonia 00:03, November 2, 2010 (UTC)
Showing only safehouses and general "been there, got everything" sounds useful, yeah. By the way: Holy sh*t, I'm sooo far away from your western cluster, it's not funny. That's 15 to kilometres at least, by air. I really gotta go south a bit. Seems like I'm just on the edge of the city (Granada Hills, northwestern rim)... --Elbi 00:55, November 2, 2010 (UTC)
it's real outdated. My position isn't updated, but there's a large amount of logged locations. It's multiple pages, and each page displays a small portion of locations at once. Import it to google earth to see it all at once. Whitesymphonia 01:44, November 2, 2010 (UTC)
How'd you get the icons? The map me, Ross, and Sophie are working on could definitely use them... --Axe Hack 02:03, November 2, 2010 (UTC)
add them yourselves, tehre's an option for it. I was going to export this one and reimport it and have you guys work off this since it has a lot already, but the icons get disfigured when I do, so i'm trying to sort that out first. Brendan's the owner of that one, so I cant add u guys. I gotta make my own from importing that one. then I can add you guys.Whitesymphonia 02:06, November 2, 2010 (UTC)
The one that me, Ross, and Soph are working on is right here. It's under a public Google account. You should have the email and password for it. I'm pretty certain I sent it to you in-game. --Axe Hack 02:19, November 2, 2010 (UTC)
yea, I see now. Changing the icons is gonna be a pain in the ass. I think I got the pass and email, gotta figure out how to import mine into that. Whitesymphonia 02:24, November 2, 2010 (UTC)

Nutrient & Liquid Needs? Edit

We need to work out a word, or phrase for food and drink, also a standard phrase for the 5 attributes the survivors have? Any thoughts? --Rosslessness 11:21, November 2, 2010 (UTC)

Well, someone made a "Survival Needs" Section on the mainpage. Not exactly the best choice I think, but it's better than nothing. Whitesymphonia 19:02, November 3, 2010 (UTC)
Easy to change it. What are your thoughts? --Rosslessness 19:51, November 3, 2010 (UTC)
dont really know. Never really tried to sum it up as one word. Really can't think of something better than survival needs Whitesymphonia 23:21, November 3, 2010 (UTC)
